Why monkeys make good pets

Once they reach sexual maturity, they often become unpredictable and aggressive, and their owners are unable to handle them. And monkeys are extremely social. They also require commercially prepared monkey food supplemented by fresh fruits, veggies and greens.

In New York City, only zoos, laboratories or veterinary hospitals are permitted to keep monkeys. They are also allowed for exhibition for showbiz purposes if a permit is obtained from the Department of Health. Just like people, each monkey has his or her own unique personality. Some are more gentle and some are more aggressive. However, even the sweetest baby monkeys grow up to become wild animals. Just because you raise a monkey from the time he or she was a baby doesn't mean it will lose its wild nature.

They are all wild animals simply because they are monkeys. Even the sweetest monkeys are unpredictable and can become aggressive at any point, even with their owner. People who live in houses simply can't give the basic habitat requirements that monkeys need.

They typically need much more space than a traditional house can offer. Plus, monkeys are curious creatures who get into everything. This means that cords, leashes, cleaning products, windows and more could be a death sentence for a monkey. In addition, monkeys can be very vocal, with many of them making such loud sounds that they can be heard miles away.

Neighbors generally won't appreciate this. Most monkeys cannot be effectively toilet trained. Sometimes, younger monkeys can be partially potty trained, but they lose that ability as they mature. In addition, as they're attempting to potty train, they tend to throw their poop and play with their pee. Because of this, pet monkeys have to wear diapers throughout their lives.

Monkeys need a lot of room to move around and play. They like to roam outdoors as much as possible. If they're not in the wild, then they need a secure enclosure that is huge and expensive. Certain states require certain types of enclosures in order to obtain a permit to have a pet monkey.

Most of these enclosures have to be a minimum of 30 square feet or more, but the truth is that monkeys never truly acclimate well to living their life in an enclosure of any kind.

Monkeys must have a variety of new toys and exercise equipment to keep them entertained and challenged. Otherwise, they get bored, and that's when they start acting out throwing things and biting people.

Monkeys can easily have diseases that are very dangerous to humans -- and vice versa. This is why most zoo professionals wear special garments to protect against diseases when dealing with monkeys. There are a few documented cases where a monkey is well-trained and lives out its entire life with humans without causing harm.

They have specialized diets that are time-consuming and expensive to prepare. Monkeys eat things that are strictly found in nature like nuts, seeds, and fruits. There are a few species that also eat small animals like spiders, lizards, and insects. Some monkeys end up developing diabetes because of the poor diets that their owners feed them.

Baby monkeys start out as sweet, dependent creatures, but all of that changes once they start to age. Because they are such social animals, not enough time with other people, monkeys, or animals creates a slew of behavioral problems. Some monkeys are gentle, but more often than not, they become aggressive towards anyone that they are nearest to.

This is especially true after puberty. Monkeys are also curious and are going to rifle through anything they can get their hands on. On top of having large and secure enclosures, monkeys must be able to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Unfortunately, most monkeys cannot be toilet trained. Some young monkeys wear diapers, but that ability is usually lost as they mature since they just pull it off. Lots of pet monkeys resort to flinging their feces and urine when bored. Monkeys are exotic animals, and it is reflected in the cost. The idea of keeping a pet monkey is far more enticing than the reality of it.
